City Council Aims to Increase Parking Ticket Revenue by $1 Million

Earlier this year, the City of West Hollywood raised parking meter rates from $1.00 to $1.50 per hour--and many of you let me know exactly what you felt about it.  Now, the City is considering extending the hours of operation for the parking meters, and you have a chance to weigh in.

Hoping to raise at least $1 million in new revenues, the City is proposing the following changes:
  • Extend meter operations from 6 PM to 2 AM on meters West of Fairfax
  • Extend meter operations from 6 PM to 10 PM on meters East of Fairfax
  • Add Sunday meter enforcement between 11 AM and 8 PM citywide
The City budget has already appropriated funds from extended meter enforcement in its budget, but that does not mean these longer hours are a done deal.  In the late 1990's a similar proposal was adopted, extending enforcement hours in the Boystown area, but repealed after public outrage.

Personally, this is the kind of money-grab that is unwise during an economic downturn but which is necessitated by the excesses of a City Hall where spending is out-of-control.  West Hollywood residents and visitors should not be on the hook for six-figure salaries and Soho House lunches. PS - They don't have to worry about abiding by the same rules since they all get VIP parking passes.

  1. Maybe the weho parking cops want to join the six figure salary club too.

  2. That's the whole point of having parking meters take credit cards ... makes it easier to pay $1.50 per hour.

Remember, they have a $16 million robo-garage to pay for.

  3. The fact that the city manager makes over $300K is absurd... And all the excessive benefits and paid time off. No wonder these guys grab these public jobs and sit on them forever. The private sector would never pay so excessively for that role. I'm sure the City Manager could never make it in the private sector.

  4. Do City council members and managers really get free parking? Outrageous! This hurts businesses and residents. This increases are supposed to pay for the robo parking for City Hall! We pay more than enough already! Vote any of them who voted for this out of office next chance. Residential parking permits also just went up. Spending is out of control.

  5. Doesn't West Hollywood have a surplus budget? Why do they need more money?

  6. This will really hurt the PM night life scene in weho. In this economy to increase the cost of visiting our city makes no sense. Its all about unchallenged greed by the city manager and the other players who are exploiting there positions to shake down the residents and visitors. Did you know that the head of Parking makes $162,000. The Parking operations supervisor makes $118,00 and the Parking services officer makes $96,000. Not to mention the parking ticket company is a for profit company and they get paid by the city like $30 a ticket they pass out.

  7. Check out the salary's that are driving the money grab in parking

  8. If you can't afford an extra .50 an hour you probably shouldn't have a car. People will pay $12.00 a drink and are going to freak out over .50 which they probably wouldn't even pick up off the sidewalk if they saw it.

  9. Wait until you hear their spin on this is supposed to help the businesses by making it so different people can have access to establishments they want to go to.

  10. Your point would only be well taken of the entire city of LA wasn't already enforcing those same hours. Economic downturn is not an excuse to not pay a few bucks for parking.

Have you been to NY? Or Boston? Or Chicago? Even with the new hours, this is still cheaper than most major cities.

Not to mention, all the people that park down in Melrose, go to the clubs, and then come back to their cars and barf all over the place. They should be paying for that privilege.

  11. just because this is cheaper doesn't justify it being right. where are the fucking revenues going? 6 figure salaries for monkey jobs in monkey suits. city manager $300K, somebody needs to make sure these fuckers get a good shakedown
